Wine & Gastronomy

According to the archaeological record, it is believed that wine has been produced in the Sado region for 4000 years and exported since the Phoenicians founded the city of Setúbal around 9th century BC. The most famous wine of the region has to be Moscatel de Setúbal, the grapes are thought to have been introduced from Egypt by the Phoenicians or the Greeks, a wine which achieved international recognition in the middle ages and graced the courts of Richard II of England and later Louix XIV’s Versailles.

Today, Azeitão, Palmela and the Sado Estuary produce a wide range of excellent red and white wines, as well as the Moscatel.  The winery of Catralvos is our neighbour and two of the major Portuguese wine producers, Bacalhôa and José Maria de Fonseca are located in nearby Azeitão and offer wine tastings and cellar tours, and there is a wealth of smaller producers located within 30 minutes. There are lots of different grape varieties under cultivation (indigenous and French) and a wide range of terrains in the Sado region providing a huge variety of wines to get to know. Good for wine amateurs and specialists alike.

The Rota de Vinhos, the local wine route, has several self drive tours available, all very reasonably priced. Click the button below to find out more.

We stock a range of local whites, reds and Moscatels in our bar from €11 to €40 per bottle.

Azeitão is famous for its sheep’s cheese, the Queijo de Azeitão, a cheese made with raw sheeps milk, salt and the flower of the Cardoon thistle. This region has plenty of other great produce to enjoy like fried cuttlefish, Choco Frito, from Setúbal, and the Cataplana de marisco from Sesimbra, to mention just two. The freshest fish and exceptional seafood is available in Sesimbra. Setúbal, a famous fishing centre since Roman times (it was once the largest producer of Garam, Roman fermented fish seasoning) is home to a famous fish market with a huge selection of fish fresh from the ocean, both just a 20 minute drive away. Lisbon is within easy reach, try the new Timeout Mercado de Ribeiro with dozens of food stalls showcasing modern Portuguese gastronomy.

We offer cooking classes for groups who would like to learn how to make the famous Pasteis de Nata, Choco frito, Arroz de Tamboril and plenty of other Portuguese classics.

For wine/gastronomy groups booking the whole house, we can plan your perfect break. We can arrange transport, make recommendations and book restaurants, as well as provide cooking classes in our main kitchen and wine tastings. Please contact us for more details.

Portuguese Ceramic Tile Painting

Discover the traditional art of “Azulejos”, the Portuguese tile. The word Azulejo is derived from the Arabic word for blue. The Moors who governed Portugal during the middle ages introduced these now ubiquitous blue and white tiles. Over the following centuries, the Portuguese developed the Azulejo into a unique form of art. You will find them in churches and palaces all over Portugal.

Visit São Simão Arte in Azeitão to see a thriving traditional tile “fábrica”, where the traditional methods are still employed from raw clay to the finished tile. You can paint your own tiles which are fired over night, to take home as a souvenir, commission you own tile panel from their tile artists or buy some from the shop.
